hard drive encryption
« on: August 21, 2014, 10:28:50 AM »
Hello,

I have searched the entire forum to see if anyone has mentioned having your hard drive encrypted, with no avail.  Can anyone advise me if they encrypt their hard drives? if so, what do you use? I have windows 7 home edition, and this does not come with the bitlocker.  All of my research online, states trucrypt is a good free option, but it tells you when you get to the site that it is not secure?  Trying to make sure this is something that will be beneficial or if just backing up my data on an external drive is best.

I already use hushmail for my email encryption.

Any suggestions will be greatly appreciated!

Thanks,
Desheba

We encrypt our hard drive, and we use Bit Locker, because that is what the company we get our software from uses. They did the upgrade/install for us. I did look into TruCrypt also, and was told by my software people and a friend who works in IT that it was just as good as a program as Bit Locker.

Are you asking if it's a requirement under HIPAA? If so ..the answer is No.  The HIPAA Security Rule doesn’t explicitly require encryption of data, it requires safeguards in place. For example, if everyone has access to the hard drive and the only safeguard is to "encrypt" then you "encrypt". I use an external hard drive on my work computer for NOTHING more than work. At 6pm EVERY night, I do backup, the backup IS encrypted, the hard drive is not. I also have a key to my external drive, so that means if I have anyone else access my computer they can't access that drive. You can also create the same securities in Windows and MAC.

Not sure if that's what you were looking for or not. YOU have to take necessary safeguards.
