Old Degree
« on: October 18, 2016, 01:15:52 PM »
Hello, I graduated in 2012 with a Associates degree of applied science degree in billing and coding. After graduation, became a teachers aid. I never had a coding job, and was curious how hard would it be for me to get in the field, since I do have the degree. Im working now, but wouldnt mind a 2nd job billing and coding from home. All input and advice is welcomed and appreciated.

I think you first need to decide what you would like to do, billing or coding?  They are lumped together in the degree but they are really two separate jobs.  I'm not sure how much of a call there is for coding from home but I am a biller.  I would think coding from home would be difficult but maybe not if the patients' records are accessible on line.

As for billing from home you could always try to pick up a small account or two.  In running a billing service, getting the clients is the hardest part, so this is not necessarily an easy task.  You may be able to find a billing service that will allow you to work from home.  We do not hire people to work from home because for us it is too difficult.  There is too much that must be done in the office.

I'm not trying to discourage you just trying to be honest.  I'm actually a very optimistic person by nature.  I'm just afraid it may be difficult to find something that will allow you to work from home.  However, since you have a job and you are not desperate to be making money right off the bat you have time to market so you may be able to pick something up.  However, you will have some expenses to getting started so you have to consider that as well.

To add to Michele's response, are you a CPC? Finding a coding job without being a CPC is almost impossible these days. Some coding companies will hire CPC-A/CPC's with no experience, but they are few and far between.
