SUPERBILL FOR SELF PAY

We are only in network with one company. We have many OON patients. My provider wants to charge the patient cash rate at time of service. Then she is offering them a superbill. I want to make sure I understand this before I actually give the patient a superbill.

The superbill must show the cost the patient has paid, I understand this...but... I thought we are supposed to charge everyone equal. So if I am collecting cashpay/discount at time of service of $100, the superbill says $100 has been paid, but then I have another patient that we bill the insurance for them and we bill the insurance $150. I don't think this is correct. Can someone help me with this one?

Also, my provider would like to select "no" on accept assignment for these types of patients?

There's no law that says you cannot offer cash discount. Your bill to patient should, however reflect any discount in case they file to their insurance themslelves.

Remember that accept assignment/assignment of benefits are different. And there are carriers for example, many BCBS plans that won't honor assignment of benefits for non par plans so make sure you collect in full. Also that would be the CMS1500 not a superbill, do you mean for par providers you are filing insurance claims for?

Yes, and make SURE the actual charges are there or full charge and show discount (either is acceptable) I've seen doctors give generic superbill with original charges and patient tries to file to get more $.
