Medicare Counseling....

jenniferp:
Hello All --

Does anyone know if there is a code for just general counseling for Medicare patients (i.e., 99401-404 preventative medicine counseling)?  The only counseling codes that I can see that are covered are the ones specific to tobacco or alcohol abuse.

Some of my providers swear there is a covered code CPT, HCPCS, "G" code, otherwise, but in all of my research, I have been unable to find it.

Thanks in advance.

Jennifer

Michele:
What type of counseling?  Like what are they covering with the patient?

jenniferp:
Any type of general counseling other than tobacco or alcohol.  If they're in for the flu, counseling regarding washing of hands, avoiding contact with others while contagious, etc.

Michele:
I am not familiar with a separate counseling code for general things like that.  I would think they would be considered as part of the E&M code and that the time spent would be considered when determining the level.

PMRNC:

--- End quote ---

Agree with Michele..these things most definetely should be included with the appropriate E/M and not billed separately. There is a CPT (98960)for NON physician patient education but things like telling a patient to wash hands or take precautions with certain illness's would NOT qualify.
