ICD 10 code for knee weakness
« on: September 27, 2021, 02:48:49 PM »
Hi all,

New to coding...
Just wondering how do you guys code if the doctor writes 'knee weakness'... coz can't find a specific code for knee weakness in ICD10. There is either codes for knee pain, for general malaise & fatigue or for muscle weakness.

Thanks in advance.

You can use R53.1 for weakness, but it doesn't specifically refer to the knee(s).  Or R29.898 for "Other symptoms and signs involving the musculoskeletal system".  But there isn't any codes specifically for "weakness of the knee".    Are there any other dxs or dx codes written on the claim/super bill?

Thanx for the revert, Michele... much appreciated.

Even I had been rounding on the two codes you suggested as the exact code was not found. And of those two, R29.898 seems more close as the other is too general.

There isn't other diagnoses... Patient came for consultation status post knee surgery, and doctor has written "Postop knee weakness" as diagnosis on the claims form

Am also wondering if we can we use the code for knee pain M25.56 for this diagnosis (well, not sure if terms 'weakness' and 'pain' can be used interchangeably)

I considered that but IMO they are not interchangeable.    You can ask the dr for a more specific dx, or go with the R29.898.

Is the patient still in a global period for the knee surgery? If so, you should diagnose Z09, and be done with it. If the patient is out of the global, the the code R26.898 dx seems best. Would not go with a pain code, as I agree completely with Michele that pain is not the same as weakness.

Your question is broad.  It would be hard to list all ICD & CPT codes.  The cpt codes would pretty much be the same codes used in most other specialties.  Mostly E&M codes.  ICD codes are easy to look up.  Then there are surgical CPTs but again, too many to try to list.

I would go with the post surgical code and maybe gait abnormality?
