LCSW billing under a group

(1/1)

Jennifer:
Hi,

I have a mental heath provider that is an MfT that is pulling a LCSW into her group. Can the LCSW bill Medicare being under this group?

Thank you! Jen

Michele:
The LCSW must enroll (or be enrolled) in Medicare and then linked to the group.  Then they can bill Medicare.  The form is the CMS 855R which re-assigns the LCSW's benefits to the group.

Jennifer:
Great thank you, so it does not matter that the group she is under can not bill to Medicare? Her group therapist is only an MFT.

Michele:
The group would have to be enrolled with Medicare.  I'm assuming the group is some form of corporation and has an EIN and group NPI.  If so, the MFT needs to enroll the group, with the LCSW as a rendering provider.  The MFT cannot enroll in Medicare themselves, but the group can if it has eligible clinicians employed.
