Covid Nasal Swab for in patient setting
« on: January 24, 2022, 02:14:13 PM »
Hello, My professional services client has received request from Skilled Nursing facility to do nasal swabbing for admitted patients. Which code I should use for this kind of situation? Per CMS 99211 is code for nasal swab but 99211 is out patient code. I need nasal swab code for in patient setting.

Swab Collection

There is no specific code for swabbing the enduring for COVID-19. Swab collection is included in E/M service. However, if collected in the office and transported to the laboratory, CPT code 99000 can be billed: 99000: Handling and/or conveyance of specimen for transfer from office to a laboratory.  IF there is no E&M (only doing the nasal swab) the 99211 would probably be the most appropriate.
