Is it against HIPAA to send medical bills to collections?

In specific, it is not unlawful under HIPAA to put a person’s medical bills into collections. HIPAA rules impose legal requirements on the confidentiality of patient’s identification and the privacy of their medical data, but it in no way prevents healthcare facilities from acquiring outstanding debts through collections. But in situations where revenue collections have to be made, HIPAA still applies almost in every aspect and desires the sharing of the patients' information as much as possible. If medical billing and coding is accurate and in line with clear guidelines, a provider will experience fewer cases of billing issues and collection attempts. In situations when someone disagrees with a healthcare facility, it is appropriate to speak to the provider before things progress to collections.
