VANOS issues tied to oil temp are sneaky because they genuinely can pass a cold diagnostic check. Did they mention if it was the intake or exhaust solenoid? Curious because I've heard the exhaust side tends to fail more often on the higher-mileage X5s, and I want to know what to watch for on mine.
