Is a Mesh System Better Than a WiFi Booster or Extender?

Many networking guides mention mesh WiFi systems when discussing WiFi Booster vs WiFi Extender. They claim mesh networks provide more consistent coverage across large homes without creating separate networks. However, mesh systems also seem much more expensive. Has anyone upgraded from an extender to a mesh setup? Was the improvement worth the extra cost, especially for homes with multiple floors or thick walls?
