Hello All. I really enjoy reading the posts here.  My name is Kenny.  I am an Surgical Technologist.  I have been in HealthCare for 21 years. 10 as a Tech and 11 as a Clerk(which involved some billing but we are talking 11 years ago..lol).  I am interested in opening a medical billing business. I am taking a course in it right now and I am almost finished( less then a month).  My question is can I get by on my healthcare experience as a whole when I start marketing to different practices? Or do you think It will be tough to get going at first since I don't have much billing experience to start with?

Are you taking a course in opening a billing service, or doing actual medical billing???

As far as marketing, I don't think your background will make the difference in you obtaining your client, it will depend on how you are able to market yourself. Some people can sell icewater to an eskimo!!

kceeman:
I am taking a medical billing course.  Then I was gonna purchase a book on running a medical billing business

Michele:
I think your experience should be a big plus.  Even though it isn't exclusively in billing it will be helpful.  As far as whether or not it will be easy or tough, there is no way to tell.  However, you need to exhibit confidence when you meet with your prospective clients in order for them to be confident with you.  Some people have tons of billing experience, but no confidence and won't land the account, while someone else may have no experience but is very confident and signs the provider on the spot.

Good luck!

Michele
