Hello and Thankyou for this website

First, I would like to say thank you for this website. I have been searching for a couple of months now and have finally landed my information portal. Thanks again!!

Now lets get down to business. I am 26 and I am in advertising (Yellow Pages). I am starting to research to start my own medical billing service. I grew up in a Dr.'s office since my mom was a medical biller and her boss use to let us come in and hang out just as long as we were quit. She is getting ready to retire from the 'office setting'. She billed for 20 years and she is currently the Administrator Assistant of an Oncology office. She badly wants to retire and supplement her income with billing. I am in advertising. I make cold calls on a daily basis, deal with professionals, and have a great "I can do" attitude. This all started when she asked what the competition was in the current city that I live in. After doing some research I discover that this city has absolutely no competition. I have interviewed 5 physicians and they have all agreed that it would bring their overall cost down and they were really interested in this service. I have one doctor (OBGYN) that will give me his business today if I was up and running. The question I have is my mom is in Michigan and I in Alabama. I would like to hire her as my biller since she has 26 years experience. How would that work? On another note I plan on purchasing your whole program soon. Thanks again. I'll be here daily.

My best advice if this client wants aboard now is to let your mom do the work while you get the proper training. You should probably structure your business to make your mom a partner rather than an employee (better savings) I've siblings and friends do partnerships that don't work out..but good news.. Mom/child teams work good. Who would screw over their mom or visa versa?  For now and the interim you focus on what you do best ..Marketing and get your training in on the side. Most of this business in the beginning is about marketing and referrals so you have that advantage. If you didn't have your mom I would tell you to put off starting this for about a year and get the necessary training you need.  You and your mom can work together using various solutions such as remote access, web based PM software, etc.
You will want to research the various start up things you will need, have your contracts ready, your Business Associate Agreements ready and of course a good compliance plan. Good luck to you!

Your right with the trust! My mom is a good woman. She put me up while I was going to school and I know she struggled and this is the way to pay her back. I started looking at some web based software, anything you recommend? When I look up the training I keep getting spam, is there any website or program you recommend? My first purchase is going to be the medical billing in a box from this website. I guess that can be step 1. Thank you for your response I look forward to talking to you in the future.

P.S. My mom just signed up her name is PatD

My son called me today and told me about your website.  I was anxious to get on and see what you were all about and I was really impressed.  We are going to be starting our own billing service after the first of the year and your website is going to be most helpful!!  I have been in the Oncology/Hematology field for the past 24 years and so billing for other specilities is a little intimidating.  Thank you for your comments about the software and my son and I are going to be doing a lot of research in the next few months.  I am sure I will have a lot of questions when I get into this deeper and it is good to know that I can go to your website and be confident with your answers!! Thank You!!

Glad to have you both on board.  Alice and I are a mother daughter team and it's been going strong for 15 years.  We have a partnership but since she's the mom, she gets to be the president, I had to settle for VP.  Oh well, I get to be "president" at home.  LOL.

Seriously, it sounds like you guys have a great combination.  That was why Alice and I decided to work together.  I had billing/coding background, she had business/marketing background.  We have had to 'cross train' but we use each other's strengths and it works well.  You have a great advantage over others, you have clients and potential clients before you start.

As far as software, web based would probably be best for you since you have a distance issue.  That way you can both be in the system from your own locations.  We recently looked into several web based programs and they vary greatly in price.  I know there are some free ones out there but in my opinion, you get what you pay for.  However, many of the others were way too pricey, especially for billing services.  Many charge per dr and for me that isn't feasible.  There is a new software that will be released 1/1/10.  Many people advise against going with a new company, and with good reason.  But we have been working with this company for over 18 months and the product they are developing is going to be amazing.  It not only compares with some of the best web based PM's out there, but it does it for a fraction of the cost.  It can do this because it is utilizing a new SAAS technology thru Amazon.  Anyway, if you are interested I can get a demo set up for you.  There are other good web based PM's out there, but the cost is usually much higher.  The PM I'm talking about will be $149 a month per seat, unlimited drs.

Good luck in your business - but honestly I don't think you will need any luck.  It sounds like you have a solid plan.

Michele
