DMK:
Just received a call from National Provider Compliance stating that there is an April 1, 2010 deadline to be compliant with the "new" ICD10 coding, "new" CPT, and "new" Medicare coding. They have a 1/2 day seminar for $147.00 to make sure we providers are getting every penney and on time.
Has anyone heard of this? Any feedback?
Thanks!
Dina

Dina, I and my peers are currently working on our X12 5010 and ICD-10 project and I am unaware or have heard of any April 2010 Deadline. Our planning and development stage begin in 2009 Our 2010 plan, we are focusing on system development System changes to comply with 5010 should be done by January 2011, at the latest, for testing/revision during 2011 (for 5010 compliance by January 1, 2012). Sounds like someone is trying to make a quick buck. Here is a peek at my our current progress
1. Complete impact assessments initiated in 2009. By early 2010 identifie what systems are affected by ICD-10 and to what extent, where and how much training and when, and estimated effort to do conversions from ICD-9 to ICD-10, in order to determine capacity and required staffing levels to complete budget planning.
2. Determine the implementation strategy by early 2010. Determine both the business strategy and technical strategy
3. Define functional requirements. Based on the implementation strategy, define functional requirements for system development efforts and perhaps begin system development before the end of 2010. Provide ICD-10 coding training. Staff who translate coverage policies require detailed training on application of the ICD-10 code sets. It could easily take a year or two to update/translate all the coverage policies from ICD-9 to ICD-10. Training must be done in 2010 so you are prepared to begin this conversion in 2011.
Hope this helps

Dina,
Sounds like a scare tactic to get you to sign up for their seminar.

I really would be interested in a contact number to this facility, so that I could question them about this so called, April deadline?
Michele:
This is a common tactic. They take an upcoming deadline for something small, turn it into a serious concern, present themselves as a government agency (not outright, but by implication) and scare people into paying to attend their seminar. I don't know the number for this one, but Dina should have it. They usually send out a flyer or brochure.
