Michele:
Great advice Charlene. Unfortunately there are many providers out there that take advantage of their billing service. Ironic since they wouldn't have any receivables without them! It is important to have a good policy on non payment in place and strictly enforce it. If it's not obvious, I'm speaking from experience. >:(

I know, I am going through it now with one client. I changed my invoice date for her to the 15th, therefore instead of owing one amount, she owed a different amount, because I had to prorate the fee. I invoice the on the first of a full month after billing. EX if you start on the 15th of jan, your first bill is due March 1. If your rate is 1500 per month, then your first invoice will be 2250. I started her on the 28th of jan, and invoiced her march 1st. she stated she pays everything (employees) on the 15th, which is good, but has nothing to do with me I explained to her. However I stated if she wanted to pay on that day, i would make an adjustment for her, but her balance at that point would be prorated for 2 wks, and he new balance would be $$$. He eyes bugged out. As I am not an employee of yours, I can not run to the labor board for failure to pay. I get paid for the services I perform or I cut you off like Duke Power....no MERCY!! Trust me, when you do a good job (as I do for her), she don't want to lose revenue. She went over 4 months with her billing out of wack until I took over.
I agree that providers do take advantage of billing services, thats why you must stand your ground. In reality they don't take advantage of us, we roll over and allow them to screw us. If they don't pay CUT THEM OFF!! When we as billing services represent ourselves as professionals, and not the sterotypical "home biller" as most play us to be, we will gain our respect back. When we stop allowing fly by night billers to DESTROY the industry and the reputation of this business, we will get our respect back. As much as I need the money from one of my clients, I had to put my foot down because she was trying to run my business. It is my fee, my schedule, my invoice. If you don't like the price, go elsewhere and get screwed over. I even got emails from her LME, that my billing was GREAT!! She had so many problems before. They even stated they would refer me out to other mental health practices that needed assistance.
YaY Me!!

Thanks Charlene for the good advice. I'm going to use some of your suggestions. We tend to let our providers go too long without paying us. It is amazing how much help we can be to each other.
