Hello everyone,
I have been reading some posts and everyone seems very supportive here.  I am now just considering starting a billing business.  I have almost no experience.  I am a massage therapist who has done my own no fault billing.  I have also worked briefly for a chiropractor and know a little bit about billing.
I am planning for the future.  I have been doing massage 10 years and am getting fatigued.  I am intelligent, understand the forms I have filled out, am interested in it, have dealt with insurance companies on the phone and am willing to get educated to learn more.
Does anybody have any encouraging and helpful suggestions for me?  Courses to take, books to read, etc.   
I would primarily be interested in billing for chiropractors, acupuncturists, physical therapists...is this a good idea?  This is what I am already familiar with.  I live in New York and these types of health practitioners are plenty. 
I am open to advice.

I think billing for those specialties is a good idea based on your background.  Planning ahead is a great idea.  My cousin is an LMT and it is a very physical job.  I always wondered how long someone could do it.  Anyway, maybe you could do some billing on the side to continue to gain experience, while you are still practicing.  There are some good online courses, and plenty of books.  Be careful when selecting books, I find that many are written by people who are not doing, or have not done billing.  What part of NY are you in?  We are also in NY.

Kate, is your interest in billing just to move from massage therapy, or is it something you have a true interest in. Also for each service, billing is totally different. The technical aspects are the same. You need to know your dx codes, hcpcs, cpt's modifiers, insurance etc. but each specialty is different. I think one issue many face is they may work for a general practitioner for years, and take on another specialty not realizing that it has specific billing needs, and get totally overwhelmed.

Thank you for the responses.  I actually do have a true interest in the work.  I know my strengths and weaknesses and this is something I have interest in, can see myself doing well with.  I live on Long Island.  I have applied through craigs list for a couple of billing positions.  I will pursue that.  As for courses, any suggestions?  I checked out www.medicalbillingcourse.com and that looked good.  Any thoughts?  Thank you again for any help.

Excellent course, we have SEVERAL members who have completed their course and have gone on to be quite successful. It's very through and IMO one of the few courses really geared towards starting your own billing company as opposed to teaching just billing.
 

Also ..Note:  If you are in NY it is illegal for providers to enter into fee-splitting arrangements so you will want to come up with alternate pricing arrangements :) That's not a bad thing though, the concept of getting paid for all your hard work is much more appealing and very acceptable here in NY. I'm in upstate (Lake Placid area)
