Does a therapist need a different PTAN for each county in CA?

I was told by a therapy company that in Calif. there used to be two areas: Northern and Southern CA.  Each required a separate PTAN for each therapist.

This company says that Medicare or Palmetto now requires each therapist to have a different PTAN for each county in which that therapist sees patients.

I called Palmetto and was told that there are still just the 2 areas (northern and southern CA) and no need for a different PTAN in each county.

Does anyone know anything about this county thing?  Am I being mislead by the company?

There are two areas, northern and southern.  Each provider needs a PTAN for both if they see patients in both.  I haven't heard of them being issued for each county, just by northern and southern.

There are only 2 contractors (claim processors) far as I know North and South
