I was just saying in another topic that I have a client who has the EMR software that enters CPT codes based on his notes, well he was audited by MC, and it took me and a colleague of mines to get him out of the mess he was in. He too, was sold on the idea that EMR would replace billers, and guess who he called when he needed experts to go to court w/him? Guess who got him out of the mess that he was suckered into by the sellers of these programs? A medical biller and coder. We found his particular software was doing a massive amount of upcoding, which is a BIG no, no, as we all know. I think it's important, as others have said, to inform our clients and potential clients of the pros and cons of EMR's, and explain to them exactly what the system is.
My ophthalmologist has been on an EMR for at least 10 years, and he still has a billing department, and he outsources his collections. He is quick to say "it's just for my notes"
