Who do you list as Financially Responsible Party?

DialysisBiller:
When entering a patient in your billing system and their spouse is the policyholder, do you enter the patient or their spouse as the financially responsible party?

Michele:
If they are the insured, and you want their info to print out (or be electronically transmitted) on the CMS 1500 then our practice management system requires that they are entered as a patient.  Then they can be selected as the insured for the spouse and/or children.

If they are over the age of 18, the financial responsibility is listed as self. Now in the insurance field when you load the insurance, The policy holder's information name, birthdate and relationship to patient is listed. This way when you print the HCFA claim or send elec. My daughter is 20, and on my policy. She is responsible for her copay, ded, coins. She in essence will be the one that you pursue for any balance thats left over. Although its my insurance plan, don't send me any bills...LOL
