Hiring Employees

This question is more so for the future, because currently I am the only biller for my office. I would like to hire an employee at some point, but would like to have it to where they have choose to work from home or at the office is this generally a good or bad idea? What are some different ways I can pay this employee, does it have to be by the hour?

Thanks,
Donyelle

This not only depends on you and your goals for your business, what you are comfortable with but also WHAT you are willing to do to maintain compliance. Having an employee is one thing, having them OFF site is quite another. You will need more insurance and there of course is MUCH more liability. Personally, for me this was not something I entertained due to all I would have to do to ensure the compliance of my business. I am already a 3rd Party, I did not want to have 4th party, and you would need to disclose this to clients in your HIPAA BAA.   JMO

Also, another thing to consider, in our experience it is very hard to find good employees that will do what you want them to do in the office, I wouldn't want to know what they would do if they were in their home.  It's probably a bad time for me to comment on this but we have found that many employees will take advantage and working from home really gives them an opportunity to.  I am personally against employees working from home.

Me too.. very much so. I am amazed at ones that hire out and do NOT disclose it to their clients which not only opens them up to HIPAA violations, but doctors are already skeptical about outsourcing, add to that outsourcing company has outsourced employees.. NOT good IMHO.

Thanks Ladies, for your opinion and quick response. You know after i read your responses I quickly remember, how I had a co-worker key word Had that was allowed to work from home, and to make a long story short, when the company had to downsize and lay off she was in the group to be laid off. Well, when she had to returns all equipment, claims ect. It was quickly realized that she was doing a whole lot of nothing, and that was why she didn't meet the estab goals each month. One of my close friends had the honor of cleaning of what a mess and had to try to correct the bad a/r and get the billing going correctly. It was a nightmare for her, but ok... yes thank you.
