Are medical coders required to deal with doctor's handwriting? (Newbie question)
happysoul:
I am considering the possibility of going into medical coding. I have never worked in the medical field. Do coders need to deal with hard-to-read doctors' handwriting? Just the thought of it is quite scary.

Richard, I have used the search function to look for the answer without success. That's why I started this thread. Thanks anyway.

Yes, absolutely coders need to go through the medical records and not all doctors use transcription services. You'll also want to have some medical terminology as well.

a lot of docs are using EMR now, so handwriting would not be an issue there. Also operative notes are always typed/computerized so you are ok there too...I would not let the issue of handwriting stop you- coding can be a very lucrative career if you are willing to enter the field at entry level (receptionist/charge poster etc...) good luck!
