Medical Billing Fee for Surgical Billing

(1/1)

Julie Walker:
Hello -  I've been doing medical billing for a few years now, and typically getting 6-9% of collections.  I now have the opportunity to bid on surgical billing and I'm not sure how to price it.  I've heard this is typcially done at a lower % rate, because the payment amount per claim is much higher.  I've also heard there's a lot more work that goes into getting surgical claims paid correctly!  So I'd like to find out what the industry standard is for sugical billing.  Any input is welcome!

PMRNC:
I really don't think this can be answered on a general basis. Naturally those % fees are going to be high for a surgical provider but also I think it depends on the individual practice. I never had a "blanket" fee schedule and base charges on a FULL and complete analysis of each practice before even quoting an estimate. I also don't do % based billing and I especially wouldn't do it for the work that would be involved with surgical billing either. JMHO

This is an old post..but I think surgery is the EASIEST specialty to do. I don't know why you would think it is so difficult. Remember, you are not reading an op report and figuring out the codes.
