naturopathic doctors

Does anyone do billing for a naturopathic doctors, it seems like many of the codes would be similar to a primary care doctor.  With the expansion of Health Care Reform it looks like many states have now recognized alternative forms of medicine (ND) and insurance will cover these claims.  Any input?

The codes used would depend on what is allowed within the scope of practice. There are states that require these services to be covered but I think you would need to check with each insurance plan. Sometimes patients can choose a naturopathic physician as their PCP.

I have not billed for any naturopathic doctors but I have talked to many.  Like Merry said, codes would depend on scope of practice.  But many would be similar to primary care doctor.  Insurance carriers will determine if they are allowed based on the provider's credentials.

They are very similar to a primary doctor, one of our doctors practices traditional western internal medicine and naturopathic medicine (usually patients pick one or the other), for the insurance plans that cover the latter his billing is almost identical to a regular E&M visit most of the time.

DMK:
Be sure to check your state though, some states do NOT recognize Naturopaths, or they're Chiropractors with extra credentials (which still doesn't make them an MD).  Oregon is one that allows A LOT more.
