Billing code 99071 for education materials?

2012billingrep:
Is anyone using this code to bill for educational materials such as pamphlets/reading materials given to patients to read at home? If so, are you getting reimbursement for it?

PMRNC:
CPT 99071 states: 99071 Educational supplies, such as books, tapes, and pamphlets, provided by the physician for the patient's education at cost to physician     So if physician provides the materials at THEIR cost you can charge for it.

JMHO  but if my doctor tried to charge me for a Phamplet I'd tell him no thanks and get it somewhere else, books, tapes, etc are usually available on loan from the doctors offices too. Now if he is giving patients nice books or tapes he buys to keep in office, you can charge for those, carriers may not pay them, and of course I would make sure patient knows they cost $.

Thanks for the info!

Yes, physician gives pamphlets out at his cost so this would be the correct code to use. Whether we get reimbursement for it from the ins companies is a different story!
