Help in coding Neuropsychological testing or 96116

As stated above the patient is being referred by another psychologist who has already billed the 90791.  We need to do the Mental Status exam by a psychologist, can we just bill the 96116 without the 90791 being charged again to this patient?

the 90791 is for psychiatric diagnostic evaluation.   96116 is neurobehavioral status exam, per hour of the psychologists time, both face-to face time with the patient and time interpreting test results and preparing the report.

i would say that if a different psychologist just doing a diagnostic eval, then use 90791.   Have you received the initial exam from the first psychologist?  How long has it been since the initial one was done?

Thank you Regina:  it has only been a week for the first psychologist and the dxs would be the same for both. I am going to bill 96116 and we will see.

If you are doing only the mental status and no testing, I would not use the 96116, due to the guidelines.
