SOCIAL SECURITY NUMBER VS TAX ID

(1/1)

lori9759:
Good morning everyone
I own a medical billing company and I have a client, that in order to bill for one provider in network and the other out of network, their credentialing manager has them using their social for the out of network provider.  Is this safe for the doctors?  Could this lead to them possible being sued personally?

I would appreciate any help in this matter.

Thank you

Lori

Hi Lori,

Not sure why the credentialing manager has the out of network provider using their social security number.  How is the practice setup: sole proprietor, LLC, or Corporation?  This will determine if the providers can be sued personally.  Depending on the insurance, it usually doesn't make a difference if the provider is in-network or out of network in regards to if the social or Tax ID being used. We do credentialing and most, if not all, of our providers use a Tax ID number to submit claims under whether they or in or out of network.
