Maybe someone could help me with this. i have a psychologist and He's only participating with blue cross and just sees all the rest as out of network. So I would put "no" for accept assignment for all of the insurance carriers except blue cross right? My other clients are participating with most insurances so this is kind of new to me.

honestly, I have all my insurances set to accept assignment. in the past, if I had "no" marked, the oon's would send the payment to the patient. all my oon's said that if i marked as "yes", payments would come to provider and because npi shows oon, we can charge the remainder to patient after whatever insurance pays. now, this may be incorrect, i have seen both ways, but our documentation from the oon's says to do this for provider to get payment instead of patient.

Some insurance carriers do allow OON providers to say "accept assignment" and receive payments. If the provider is OON and wants to be OON, and knows that in most cases patient will be paid directly then I would check 'no' on "accepts assignment".

Note that BCBS carriers in all states but 2 I believe do NOT have to honor assignment of benefits for NON par providers. If you are billing BCBS and are NON par, the best solution is to take payment from the patient at the time of service. In all other carriers your contract supersedes all and you should follow that contract on accepting assignment.
