Does anyone know anything about billing for orthopedic surgery? I have a DR. who wants to know if I would do his electronic billing to Medicare for him. He stated that there would only be 30-60 transactions a month and didn't know if that would be to little for me to take on.. I have no clue. I have no idea how much goes into the billing for them. How different their billing is and how much each claim normally averages. And can you even charge a % collected from Medicare?? How would I bill for this??

Thanks

Chris

Most states do have laws on fee splitting in which charging a % violates.  You need to check your state laws to be sure.  Even though the number of transactions is not that big, the average claim charge is much higher than a PCP, or family practice physician.  You can ask him what his average claim charge is to get a better idea.  You should try to research the common codes for orthopedic surgeons and brush up on modifiers.  Unless you are providing coding services they are suppose to give you the claims fully coded, but it helps if you understand the codes and modifiers.  Then if you see something that is not right, or inappropriate then you can advise him.

Good luck
