Psych consult for Bariatric surgery

(1/1)

camedbill:
Hello:  Can anyone tell me when we bill psych consult for bariatric surgery, do we still bill to mental health insurance and not medical? and if so, what diagnosis do we use if patient does not have a psych diagnosis?  Thanks in advance for your help!

Michele:
We bill a lot of MH but I have not billed for a psych consult for bariatric surgery but I believe you would still bill mental health insurance because they go by the provider type.  If there is no MH dx, then you could look at Z04.89, Z04.9 or Z04.6.  Whatever one makes the most sense.  Or you could bill with the E66.2 for morbid obesity.  I obviously am assuming because of they type of surgery that morbid obesity would be applicable.

Sorry I cannot be more help.  I actually researched it as well and information is not specific.

Most helpful to know they would go by provider type.
Thank you Michele!

Good Afternoon,

Have you had any success with this?  My practice is beginning to bill assessments for bariatric surgery. I am researching the codes. Most of these will be GA medicaid patients.  I am finding 96156 as an assessment, however I think this is an encounter code, not billable in 15 minute increments. Can I add on 96130 & 96131?  I also saw using 90837 and 90792.  Any advice?
Thanks!  E.Burley

Michele:
To date we still haven't billed for this.  I haven't heard anything additional either.

96156 is not a time based code so it would just be billed with one unit for the entire encounter.  96130 & 96131 are not add on codes.  I am not sure if they would be allowed on the same date of service, but you can try billing them together.  How long does the bariatric surgery assessment take?
