Was wondering is in necessary for a medical billing business that work in a specialty, I'm looking to start working with mental health practitioners. Would my business need an NPI or would that be taken care of by the practitioners?

It's not a necessity but it can be helpful. It's easier to learn one specialty rather than multiple ones. But it can also limit you as well. We sometimes will say we specialize in a certain specialty for marketing purposes. But we don't limit ourselves to that specialty.

No, as a biller/billing company you do not need an NPI. NPI's are for providers only.

Really??????

Medical Billers are not health care providers.
All Individuals and Organizations who meet the definition of health care provider as described at 45 CFR 160.103 are eligible to obtain a National Provider Identifier, or NPI. If you are a HIPAA covered provider or if you are a health care provider/supplier who bills Medicare for your services, you need an NPI.

I think someone hijacked my account. I would not have answered with this. ??? I think I thought they were asking about specializing in one specialty and I ignored the NPI portion.
Richard is definitely right. NPI numbers are NOT needed for billing services.
