New CPT Code 99072

(1/1)

sbel133:
I've just read about the new CPT code:

https://leader.pubs.asha.org/do/10.1044/2020-0916-cpt-ppe-pandemic/full/?fbclid=IwAR27EkP7ugff71W8vBgOQuqoEM8JA2h3-ae04EWJr8gsSLzL8hu52n5KZVg

"Clinicians can use the new CPT 99072 on insurance claim forms to report the cost of personal protective equipment (PPE), cleaning supplies, and clinician or clinical staff time to ensure safety".

Does anyone have any insight on this?

Michele:
I have only seen the AMA release stating that 99072 "was approved in response to sweeping measures adopted by medical practices and health care organizations to stem the spread of the novel coronavirus (SARS-CoV-2), while safely providing patients with access to high-quality care during in-person interactions with health care professionals. The additional supplies and clinical staff time to perform safety protocols described by code 99072 allow for the provision of evaluation, treatment or procedural services during a public health emergency in a setting where extra precautions are taken to ensure the safety of patients as well as health care professionals. The AMA/Specialty Society RVS Update Committee (RUC) worked with 50 national medical specialty societies and other organizations over the summer to collect data on the costs of maintaining safe medical offices during the public health emergency and submitted recommendations today to the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services to inform payment of code 99072."

I haven't had any providers bill it yet.

Kerri:
I have asked Medicare, BCBS, Priority Health, Humana and Aetna. None of them are paying for this code.

Srsand:
We've also billed out the 99072 for our Neurologist and have not yet had a payer pay for that code either.
