What modifier to use for PSR services?
« on: July 28, 2021, 07:30:21 PM »
Hello,

I need to know what modifier should be use for billing PSR services when place of service is 02? I am not sure if the correct modifier is GT or 95.

Also, if this is different for different companies, where can I find that information (calling the insurance companies has been a very frustrating and time-wasting process)

Any ideas will be appreciated. Thank you

Rafael

GT indicates that the services were rendered using a telecommunications system (both video and audio)

95 indicates basically the same thing, but was introduced more recently (2017).  We are finding that each carrier has their own rules/guidelines for how they want services billed.  Some want the 02 POS, others (Medicare) want the 11 with the 95 modifier.   Some don't require the modifer if the POS is 02.  Some want the GT while others want the 95.  There is no way to answer which want what.  It is something that you learn as you bill.  You can keep a spreadsheet advising which carriers want what, but unfortunately that is the best way.  We bill using the 02 POS with the 95 modifier (except Medicare because we know they want the 11).  If it gets denied, we call to speak to a customer service rep and figure out what they are looking for.  Most carriers go with the 02 and 95 so it cuts down on the number we have to call on.

Sorry!  I know that's not what you would like to hear.
