I am billing for psychiatrist that usually offers just outpatient and now he is going inpatient. I have a few questions if someone can be so kind to help....
Here are some facts..... MD is admitting physician in most cases..... MD sees patient at least once every 3 days....... other providers that work with the patients bill independently as does the MD......
1) Do I have to wait until patients are discharged to bill even if he only sees the patient 1 out of the 5 days they are on the unit?
2) Do I have to put the dates to and from on the claim even if they are only seen once by the MD i am billing for?
3) Do I have to use the AI modifier when he is listed as the attending physician?
Thanks!

No, you can bill while the patient is still in the hospital.

You use the date the patient was seen. Just as if it were an office visit.

I do not believe that the AI modifier is required, however some insurances may require it.

Since you've never done inpatient psych, make sure you have the correct POS of the facility, and the facility NPI for box 32 of your claim form.
