2019 Psychological Testing Codes
« on: May 25, 2019, 07:42:18 PM »
I just received a bunch of denials for testing that we billed in 2019 with the new psychological testing codes.  The codes we typically use are 96130, 96131, 96136, and 96137.  Medicare is denying the claims saying 'missing/incomplete/invalid provider primary identifier' and 'missing/incomplete/invalid referring provider identifier'.  I know that neuropsychological testing always required the referring physician and NPI#, but psychological testing never did.  None of the codes I mentioned are neuropsych testing (as far as I know....unless, I am unaware of something obvious) so I am very confused!  Any thoughts or experience with this?

Referring physician is required for psych testing as well, if billing Medicare.

Thanks, Kerri.  Is that a new requirement?  I have been billing Medicare for testing for over 20 years and the referring provider information was never required on the claim.  I appreciate your input!  Have a great weekend.
