South Carolina Medicaid
« on: August 21, 2019, 05:10:27 PM »
Hi Everyone!

Does anyone have recent experence enrolling with SC medicaid as a behavioral health provider?  There seems to be quite a shortage of providers for SC and we (a GA provider) are considering offering services to those just across the state line.

If you have any suggestions/advice I would appreciate it.

I have past experience with SC Mcaid as a biller for ophthalmology and I was not happy with service and reimbursements.  I don't think it is worth the trouble.

Thanks!!!

The altruistic side of me says enroll, but altruism doesn't pay the bills, so I say don't bother. I deal with Medicaid in my remote work for podiatrists, and it is nothing but a nightmare from start to finish. So much so that almost all of them pulled out of Medicaid once they had been practicing for a few years. My feeling is if you are an established practice, leave the Medicaid money (what there is of it for reimbursement, which is awful) to the new docs starting out.

I agree. Medicaid in California is the same. I have been billing 30+ years and it is not worth the time. They cover very little and most of the time it must be emergency services.
My Physician clients state they just don't take Medicaid.

One of the mental health providers that I bill Medicaid for in GA gets paid quite well by Medicaid and the Medicaid CMO's, in fact, more than private health insurance companies pay.

I would definitely research what CPT codes your provider would be billing and take it from there.

I don't have experience in SC, but NY Medicaid for optometrists is not bad.
