Please help hospital bill denied

I had to go to the emergency room in December 2018, I was under a lot of pain and in a recent transition from insurance company to another. I gave them the wrong card thinking it was the right one. After that, I had to continue visiting the hospital and more bills were submitted,this time under the right insurance company. I didn’t hear about the bill from December until October 2019 at that time, we cleared the confusion and gave them the right insurance company I had at the time, but the insurance company denied the claim because bill was not submitted on time. Is there anything I can do? The hospital had the right information For other procedures after initial visit in December and they were able to submit those claims and were paid. I called the insurance company and they said that hospital need to appeal the denial or write off the charge. But hospital already sent the account to a law collection firm.

If the payer responsible is a group health plan, follow the plan's appeal process to attempt to appeal the claim.  Even though it was error, not reporting the right plan to the hospital puts payment responsibility on you. I'd still try to appeal though. If it is a group health plan you must follow the appeal guidelines within the SPD..also look at the timely filing limit in the SPD, you may be too late for that as well.
