Billing for Lab Panels
« on: December 09, 2019, 09:23:51 PM »
Hi All,

Can someone explain billing for panels.

Doctor did a comprehensive metabolic panel. 80053. Am I to use this ONE code to represent the entire panel. When I look up this code on the Medicare fee schedule it's $11.74. That seems low which is making me question how to bill for it. It's been a while since I've billed for labs. Thank you in advance!!

the description of 80053 is:  The comprehensive metabolic panel, or chemical screen, (CMP; CPT code 80053) is a panel of 14 blood tests which serves as an initial broad medical screening tool.   So if that's what tests were done then yes, it would be the one code for all tests.
