Most states do have laws on fee splitting in which charging a % violates. You need to check your state laws to be sure. Even though the number of transactions is not that big, the average claim charge is much higher than a PCP, or family practice physician. You can ask him what his average claim charge is to get a better idea. You should try to research the common codes for orthopedic surgeons and brush up on modifiers. Unless you are providing coding services they are suppose to give you the claims fully coded, but it helps if you understand the codes and modifiers. Then if you see something that is not right, or inappropriate then you can advise him.
