If you would have a small home billing company with 2-3 clients at start would you bill direct or go with the clearing house?
Which would be the easier route?
Which would be the more profitable route?
Any recommendations would be appreciated.

of course you want to look at profitability..but time is money so I tend to go with "efficient" and think it's most efficient to have claims all routed to one spot (clearinghouse) to avoid double entry into modules/software. You can still do your own paper claims to save a few bucks.

Availity is one clearing house that is free, unless you do too many government claims per month, then there is a fee. Most charge a per claim fee, so it's nice if you can find a free one. You need to look at their payer list and see if the major carriers for your area on on their list.
