Self pay discounts

Hi! I am trying to find the guidelines for private pay discounts. We currently only bill the patient the Medicare fee schedule and I have suggested we change this to billing gross charges less a prompt pay discount at time of service. I believe billing only the Medicare fee schedule could cause us problems with Medicare or our contracted payers due to different fee schedules. Does anyone have some additional information on this subject. Thank you!

It's not a private pay situation if you have a Medicare patient? But you are right, having multiple fee schedules is not a good idea. For my clients with cash pay patients we bill the full fee and show the courtesy discount on the bill.
