Is the QW modifier really necessary..meaning if not used do I risk my claims getting denied? What exactly is this modifier telling Medicare? Thank you in advance.

The QW modifier indicates that the service is a CLIA waived lab. If you have a CLIA waiver and you are billing for services that do not require a CLIA certificate then you can bill but you do need the QW modifier on the claim.
