Can Dentist Bill Medical (not dental) for certain procedures?

Can a dentist bill  to Health Care Plans (not dental) for medical procedures like surgeries or I-V Sedation?  There is a dentist that thinks that can be done and is asking us.  And if so what does that entail? I imagine the provider would need to get credentialled and then if they can't bill with their current dental software then they would need medical billing software to bill to those carriers. Is that correct? Anything else they would need to do?

There are some oral surgerical procedures that are done by an oral surgeon that are considered to be major medical procedures, and yes oral surgeon's can bill for anesthesia and such. They don't need special software because their dental practice management system if any does make allowances for that since there are many times they have to submit to major medical.

They do have to be credentialed on the medical side as well, or it is treated as non par or out of network.
