Hi my name is Hope and I am starting my own medical billing company. A little about my history is I have no healthcare experience but I have an Associates Degree in Medical Billing and Coding with Colorado Technical University, they gave me a certificate in CPT and ICD-9. I am working on my Bachelors Degree in Healthcare Administration.
My question is what certification do I need above and beyond this that I have already and would it be better if I have someone locally to help me with the hands on training? Another question is how do I do the analysis of the clinic to determine how much to charge? Which of the book that you offer would answer this questions? I want to make sure that other medical billers don't have to fix my messes and I want to do a good job with this.
I do have my business license and business insurance but that is all I have so fare.

1.  Personally and this is JMO, certification is not needed.  It doesn't hurt you by any means but I don't feel it's a requirement.  In my 19 yrs I have never had any (NOT ONE) provider EVER ask me what certifications I have.  Hands on training is truly the best experience you can ever have, whether it's working for someone or doing your work, that is where you truly learn.

2.  Determining how to charge is a hard part of this business.  Most want to go with the %, but in some states it's illegal, and it doesn't truly pay you for your work.  Flat fees really usually end up working out better.  But how to determine  your flat fee can be tricky.  There is a lot you need to consider, overhead costs (office), PM System, postage, office supplies, your time, clearing house fees, etc.  We do have a book on "Pricing Your Medical Billing Service".  You can read about it at http://www.medicalbillinglive.com/pricing-your-medical-billing-service.shtml

Thank you very much, I am going to use a flat rate being that everyone has told me that is the best way to go. The only thing is, I do not know how to do the analysis on a clinic or is that in the book pricing your medical billing services?
