Physical Therapy billing

Hello,
Can I bill an initial evaluation code, 97001, for a patient who had been seen & was discharged & then returned a few days later after having surgery. Does it matter if the dx is different?
Thanks,
Doris

I believe most insurance carriers go by the time that has passed and the dx. I believe the re-evaluation code of 97002 would be more appropriate for what you are describing. (For the record I am Not a certified coder.)
