Hourly Rates for Projects

Hi there,

I was approached by a client who needs a special project done that will take several hours. Just curious if anyone has charged by the hour, what did you charge?

I'm thinking between $35-45, anyone have suggestions?

The practice is adding a main location and keeping two additional locations. They would like for us to contact all the insurance companies they participate with and notify them of the changes and make sure their records reflect the correct addresses. I know with Medicare and possibly a few others it will include some paperwork, but most of it will be time spent on the phone.

I personally would find out how many insurance companies.  If it didn't involve a tax id/ein change and it is just adding locations, I would either give them a per carrier fee, or a total project fee.  Many times I find that if you quote them an hourly rate of over what they pay someone in the office, they feel that you overpriced.  As we know they are getting someone experienced, and with different work ethics than an hourly employee, (not meaning anything against the hourly employee!!).  When you do a project like this, you are concentrating solely on this task, so your time is focused.  Hourly in  house employees have other things going on at the same time that they have to take care of and they usually cannot focus solely on the task.  They also may not have experience in dealing with insurance carriers on adding locations.
