I was just contacted by a clinic that has AR clean up they need done from 2008-2009. They have a billing service they use but this old AR is prior to them going with that service. I'm wondering why their current service did not take on the old AR (unless they just don't do it) and if I should. This is a clean up project. Any thoughts?

Sounds like the current billing service may have turned it down. Either they just don't do clean up or they didn't think it was a good idea (not collectible). I would think that not much from that long ago would be able to get paid so if you decide to take it on I would make sure you are reimbursed for your time, not based on what you collect. I just advised a dr that I could not do anything with his 2008 claims that are out. I started his billing a couple months ago and I know that nothing was done from 2008 until now, so I don't have any grounds for appeal. Most carriers require some action within a time period to have any grounds for appeal.

Thanks Michele, I agree about 2008. Unless there is a silver lining there I won't attempt those. Some of 2009 should still be viable depending on the carrier, if the claims were previously submitted and their filing deadline, etc.

The meeting today went well but the situation isn't pretty. They have claims spanning from 2008 to 2009 that were billed, some incorrectly and denied, no follow up etc. From what I could gather from our meeting there is about $300K left on the table at this point. The billing service they just started with deemed the old AR clean up to be too time consuming and cumbersome for them to take on. I am still thinking about if 2008 is viable at all but how do I begin to come up with a fee to take on 2009? It will be a lot of work.
