billing software

StephD:
I totally agree with Michelle.  Practice Mate is (maybe)  OK for small practices. But, it is VERY cumbersome and hard to move around in.  The site has been VERY slow lately and wasn't even working at all one day this week.  We use Practice Mate at a clinic I work at because it is free.  But, I really dislike it and have finally talked them into getting a better PM system.  I think we are going to go with Lytec.  We have used it in the past and I really did like it.

Some of our clients are on Practice Mate.  I agree with the above quote - with this addition.  I received a pop-up note that they were doing some sort of system maintenance / upgrade.  That seems to be the reason for the problem.  Today things seem to be back up to speed so far.

A number of billing software packages that used to be stand-alone or server-based for a local area network have stopped selling that type of product and now only offer cloud service for a subscription fee.  I have heard in the recent past that McKesson was / is considering doing the same with Lytec.  You might want to check that out.  And buy a copy for your computer before they stop selling it.  Or find another manufacturer of billing software that will stay with the personal computer / local area network market.  Although I think everyone will eventually gravitate to the cloud subscription model, because that model generates a steady cash-flow over time.

Wow, I hadn't heard that!  Thanks for the heads up.

StephD, if you are interested in Lytec we purchase from a great reseller located on Long Island.  Let me know if you want his info.  (I get nothing for referring you.  We just are very happy with his company!)

RichardP:
I was only giving a heads-up re. general trends in the medical billing software industry.  I did hear that about McKesson, but I don't remember where or in what context.  Since others have already stopped selling Practice Management software for the personal desktop (and only sell cloud access for a recurring fee), I wouldn't be suprised if McKesson ended up doing that too - since they already offer a cloud software as a service packate.  But I don't have a direct line to their decision-makers on this issue.  Just want to be clear about that.

Michele:
Thanks.  I'm definitely going to look into it.  I hadn't heard anything yet so I'm thankful for the heads up.  We need to be ready if/when they do decide to do that!
